About Us

It is the intention of THP to engage with all stakeholders groups to create a global dialogue on migration, bringing together the right people at the right time to generate innovative and visionary approaches in the field of migration.

In 2009-10, following the advice from its donors and advisory council, the ‘Club of The Hague’, THP developed a new strategy and approach to reflect developments in the field of migration.

The 2010-2015 Strategic Plan includes a more focused short-to-medium-term Action Plan targeting priorities identified from past strengths of THP, as well as current key areas of impact in the field of migration and development.

Communication, collaboration, an understanding of the interlinked nature of issues and the need to focus on finding solutions, all underpin the new Strategy and Action Plan.

The 2010 – 2015 objectives are to:

  • Rationalize the migration debate by building a more solid evidence base for migration and mobility policies
  • Increase constructive communication and engagement at all levels to achieve effective, actionable solutions while reducing the duplication of efforts and the resources necessary by individual stakeholders
  • Reduce the barriers to migration that hinder individual, labor, economic and community development
  • Increase the implementation of adequate policy and monitoring systems globally
  • Accelerate the pace of policy-to-practice implementation of practical solutions

By addressing these objectives, THP aims to contribute to the following outcomes:

  • Reduce the legal voids that enable human trafficking
  • Increase protection for victims, migrants, refugees, IDPs (human rights)
  • Increase access for migrants and refugees to adequate housing, education, health coverage and employment opportunities
  • Reduce considerably the risk of social unrest
  • Contribute to the reduction of poverty
  • Increase the opportunities for the social and economic development of communities affected by migration

Business Sector
THP seeks the involvement of the business community, a priority stakeholder group that both impacts and is affected by migration. More can be done to help businesses know how to approach the issues and find the solutions, while the contribution of businesses is crucial to understand the perceived and practical obstacles they face (legislation / bureaucracy), as well as to increase their involvement in the development of the communities they operate in.

Governments
THP believes that it is crucial to bring together all levels of governments – supranational, national, regional and local; all of which are key in the development and implementation of migration policy solutions – to facilitate their working with each other, as well as with other stakeholder groups.

Individual Migrants
Many successful migrants (from all forms of migration) exist that could serve as champions to raise awareness of the contributions migrants make to host societies and the issues that they encounter.

International Organizations
By acting as a neutral platform, THP aims to facilitate communication and collaboration between international organizations, as well as with other stakeholder groups. Key international stakeholders include: GFMD, IOM, ILO, UNESCO, UNHCR, OECD, UNICEF, GMG, among others.

NGOs
THP recognizes that, among any stakeholder groups, NGOs are often the most aware of the pressing migration issues affecting their specific sector / region, as well as often being the best equipped to respond swiftly on the ground. Their input and support is therefore extremely important, as is the coordination of their efforts. Key NGO stakeholders include: WEF, CGI, Amnesty International, Cities of Migration, among others.

Academia / Think Tanks
Strong, relevant research is essential to establish an evidence base for sound policies. THP’s role will aim at reducing duplication of efforts; encouraging, identifying and coordinating relevant research; facilitating distribution to stakeholders; and translating findings into actionable solutions. Key stakeholders in this group include: Oxford/IMI, Migration Policy Group, Migration Policy Institute, among others.

Public
Public sentiment is influential at all levels – through voting power, popular opinion, direct personal choices and popular movements. Communication efforts are critical to contribute to the public’s understanding of migration and change negative perceptions of migration, while working in parallel to implement solutions to migration issues.
